Originally mined in Russia, this colour changing beautiful stone type was named after 1830’ Russian Prince Alexander. This stones is one of the rarest among gems and the uniqueness of this stone is the mineral composition causes a bright green colour at daylight and a red shade by incandescent (artificial) light. The colour change varies depending on the quality of the stone and so does the price.

Other than Russia, other countries supply Chrysoberyl Alexandrites  are Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Myanmar. Most of the Alexandrite gems in the market are relatively small (I. E. Less than 1 carat) good quality larger sizes can be extremely expensive ($10,000 to $60,000 per carat). On a positive note Alexandrite are hardly heat treated due to its complex mineral composition
